Working—and Learning—From Places We Love

During the first week of November I attended Nomad City 2019, a 3-day event in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain featuring workshops, keynotes, and discussions about remote work. Conferences are valuable learning experiences, and this event was no exception! I left the event feeling energized, informed, and better connected to a community of people who believe what I believe: remote work is critical to improving work, and by extension, our lives.

To use the conference tagline,

We work from the places we love.”

Workplaceless’ mission is to positively impact both the supply (remote roles available) and demand (employees seeking remote roles) of sustainable remote work opportunities. We do that by providing engaging learning experiences that prepare people to thrive in remote work—and since these experiences are informed by current trends and best practices in remote work, we make sure that we’re involved in conversations like the ones...

Workplaceless and Cantilever Host the First Remote 5K

Over the summer we talked with our community during our monthly Networkplaceless virtual networking events about health and wellness in remote work — staying physically as well as mentally healthy and connected with remote peers. During these discussions Cantilever came to us with the idea of creating a fun Remote 5K event, and we were on-board to bring it to life.

Leading up to the event, our training hearts couldn't resist following along with a 5K training plan. Competitors shared remote training photos and inspiration along the way until race day officially arrived on October 11th.

During the live event we welcomed 25+ racers from across eight different time zones. Plus, more racers joined on their own schedule and shared photos with us via social channels. The live 5K race started with participants hopping into a Zoom meeting from wherever they are remotely located in race gear and ready to start. We opened with a couple remarks from Jacqueline Zeller, CMO...

We're Honored! Snapshots from SVTC Tech Nite 2019 - Innovation in Emerging Business Award

It's been an exciting couple months at Workplaceless!

One of the highlights was winning the JMU College of Business Innovation in Emerging Business Award at the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council (SVTC) Tech Nite. We were incredibly honored to receive the recognition and to be in such great company alongside fellow leaders in the local region.

We're grateful to be a part of the community that SVTC has grown and fostered. Not only did they celebrate business and education innovation at their annual Tech Nite awards gala, but also hosted a follow-up event with members where we were able to have a more intimate Q&A discussion about the #futureofwork. Thank you SVTC for the recognition and the fast friends!

Read our full press release here.

Check out some photos from both the Tech Nite Gala and the follow-up luncheon.

The availability of high-speed internet has given us the opportunity to be present anywhere, learn from everywhere, and grow consistently. I personally don’t remember the last time I headed to the library. Today, knowledge & information across many different subject areas is available online, accessible within seconds.

By now, many of us have become used to the fact that for nearly any subject, there is high-quality learning content accessible to you without leaving your location. And this continues to grow as you read.

A recent study shows the significant rise in e-learning, with video elements being a successful factor in much of that growth, expected to make up for almost 80% of all web activity worldwide (including e-learning) in 2019!

Let's Discuss

Dozens of speakers delivered valuable advice to a couple hundred remote workers and digital nomads last week at Nomad City

It was an incredible learning experience—not just because of the facts, information, and processes that were so generously shared. It was because the content was relevant to the audience.

They told stories. They gave clear examples. They answered questions. They gave feedback. It wasn’t just speakers delivering information. It was a conversation.

That makes all the difference between an interesting learning experience and a transformative one:

Discussion. Conversation. Synchronous exchange of ideas.

But… you work remotely. And that means that conversation is not likely to occur organically. You have to make it happen.

How can you do that?

  1. Plan. Decide what you want to get out of the discussion and who should be involved. Do you want to check and extend understanding of a concept? Incorporate new ideas into a...

A New Spin on Networking Events

Let's talk networking events. You know that building a network is important to getting a job and moving up in your career, so you attend them, or at least, you've attended them in the past.

You take your business card and you head over, ready to work the room and meet new connections. Sometimes it pans out, sometimes not. Sometimes, you have to explain what working remotely is all about. And sometimes, it's just a complete wash.

Now tell me this: have you ever wondered why all these events are still done in person? Think about the time it takes to attend traditional networking events: getting ready, traveling to the place, and then the actual event itself, then traveling back. It seems silly to use all that extra commuting time when there are so many tools that are at our disposal now that make simulating face-to-face interactions so much easier.

Well, now there is an event that uses these tools to network virtually.

And you're...

Best Remote Work Podcasts

With remote work becoming more and more common, it comes as no surprise that there are now several podcasts about the topic. If you're interested in remote work and/or the future of work, and like to hear about all the cool things that people are doing while location independent, have a listen to these great shows.

21st Century Work Life

21st Century Work Life is a podcast is hosted by Pilar Orti and Lisette Sutherland. The format is varied: in some episodes, Orti and Sutherland co-host, in some episodes they interview guests, and sometimes, they have solo shows. The topics are just as diverse and cover important topics like communication and management in remote teams, as well as issues that are faced by subsets of remote employees, like complete newbies. This show is extremely well-produced and researched. Plus, the questions and perspectives on this show will get you thinking about how to improve your own remote work experience.

I especially recommend this podcast for...
